Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that patients who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals buying such treatments should be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to original mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Experts propose the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the accelerated rebound.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the medication explain a intense return of appetite.

"It felt as if something that goes on and you become ravenous," said one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians caution that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
