The New Mayor Promises a 'Fresh Chapter' for The Big Apple in Inaugural Address
On his first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” America's largest city, promising “a different age” and an ambitious beginning to his administration.
An Unprecedented Leader
The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.
“A time such as this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the public whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.
Rejecting advice to be modest, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”
Governing with Socialist Ideals

The ceremony was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.
A Costly Policy Agenda
Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan including:
- Free childcare
- Free buses
- A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
- A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion cost of these initiatives may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the city's top earners and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Navigating External Dynamics
The new mayor also faces apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director resigned over controversial past comments.
Mamdani has attempted to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly friendly.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his remarks with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
