Pat Cummins has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.
Australia's selection chief Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming England-Australia contest.
Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.
Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in Perth.
He revealed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.
"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations involved, not just the back issue, but other factors as well," the selector added.
"It's positive. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a key capacity. Hopefully from the opening match. If not, then we'll pick it up."
Past Concerns
He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.
He has a history of back injuries, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.
The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the contest.
He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the opener.
Backup Options
If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.
The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.
Bailey described it as a "small issue and confirmed that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."
"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.
"His involvement was limited to the starting games anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
